Learning the basics of playing guitar is all well and good, but what are you going to do next after you have got to grips with those initial concepts? Don’t just tell yourself that somehow, suddenly you can play guitar. There’s much more to playing guitar than just learning some theory and some chords.
Playing guitar is an incredibly expressive way of making music, and that versatility should very much be a part of the way you play guitar. Don’t be content with just emulating others- after all, you learned how to play guitar to be able to create your own music, didn’t you? Well, if you learned to play just so you can play some cover versions and you’re happy with that, then great, but to push yourself as a musician and improvise, develop and evolve as a musician, you need to practice your own technique.
Regular practice of techniques and patterns that you are not so familiar with will only serve to make you a better guitar player and also make the actual physical act of playing music a much more satisfying one.
Being able to adequately express your ideas by exploring what you can do on guitar is a wonderful feeling, and it is a skill that will only grow as you practice. While a regular, timed practice session is a great idea, and even better idea would just be to play guitar whenever possible, and try out new things each time.
