There is a growing demand for medical billing and coding specialists all across the United States and if you decide to enter this exciting career, you are all-but-guaranteed to find employment immediately following your training. A medical biller is responsible for sending medical claims to insurance companies while a coder takes the information on patient’s medical charts and translates them into codes so that the claims can be processed by the insurance companies.

The only medical coding schools you should consider enrolling in are those which are accredited. This will ensure that you will receive a quality and legitimate education from a school that meets very specific guidelines. The same holds true for medical billing schools. Unfortunately, there are so-called schools out there on the internet that claim to offer programs in these two areas, but the truth is that many of these websites were simply built to fool people into sending the unscrupulous website owners money. Therefore it is recommended to check that schools are accredited by either the American Academy of Professional Coders or by the American Health Information Management Association.

Find out the name of the program director at the school and send him or her an email to ask about enrollment policies, how to transfer credits and if any internships are offered. Take the time to visit schools in your area and ask to sit in on a couple of classes.
